Good Things Can Happen Overnight
A peek behind the curtain — of a product years in the making, and the 'magic trick' of building something over time.
Welcome back to Take Your Time, a space where I share all the bits and pieces of what’s happening in my universe — the moments, musings, and visions. In today’s letter, I’m diving into something that’s been on my mind (and in the lab) for quite some time: our newest product. I’ll also share more on a theme I return to often — the art of making a brand, or a product, feel like a magic trick.
Let’s start with the literal goop before we get to the magic. :)
Meet: The Overnight Repair Serum —
Our first clinical formula at Crown Affair is, at its heart, a love letter to my sister. She’s been dyeing her hair blonde for over 20 years — her hair is beautiful, but she’s always searched for something that could truly repair it without the harshness of traditional bond repair or the risk of over-protein treatments that often lead to more breakage.
This product is for her — and for all the women in my life who deserve something simple, intuitive, and effective. A formula that doesn’t require multiple steps or rinsing, but still delivers the kind of repair that makes your hair look and feel like a dream.

The result is a cream-gel serum for all hair types — clinically proven to strengthen and repair, leaving hair up to 2x stronger. It hydrates deeply and offers frizz protection for over 8 hours, restoring softness and shine so your hair feels 2x smoother by morning. There’s no rinse-out. No pillow transfer. No residue. Just a fast dry-down and a quiet transformation while you sleep…
While I could talk about the soul behind our formulas forever, there’s one emotion I’ve returned to again and again since starting Crown Affair: awe.
My friend Michael, a longtime Pixar animator, first put language to it for me. Awe is that rare emotional state where your sense of self dissolves into something larger. For me, it’s wonder and delight — the moment where beauty meets perspective, and you feel yourself shift.
I know it’s ambitious to want someone to feel awe from a product (I’m not making a Pixar film here!), but there’s something magical about when something just works. When it brings unexpected joy to your daily routine — and in this case, to the health of your hair — it feels like sorcery.
The Magic Beyond the Formula
At Crown Affair, we spend years developing each product with intention. I didn’t start this business with a built-in audience — I started it because I’m obsessed with hair and wanted to make products I actually use and swear by. Innovation and quality aren’t optional; they’re essential to our survival. Each product has to be better — and it has to work.
While the development process is deeply personal and labor-intensive, I don’t want you to feel any of that. I want you to experience the most elegant solution — something intuitive and seamless, like a magic trick.
And the thing about magic tricks? They work best when you don’t see how they’re done. That’s the sense of awe I want to preserve every time you use a Crown Affair product or step into our world.
This launch campaign celebrates the idea that Good Things Can Happen Overnight.
But here’s the real truth — and the magic trick of it all: nothing actually happens overnight. It takes years of showing up, doing the work with intention and integrity. And then, one day, you’re in flow — and suddenly, it all clicks.
That feeling came into full focus this August at our first-ever booth at the Sephora Store Manager Conference (SMC) in Vegas.

When you first enter the Sephora world, you hear whispers about “Vegas” — a conference that’s equal parts mysterious and legendary. It’s the one time each year when store managers from across the country gather with the biggest names in makeup, skincare, fragrance, and haircare.
For years, Crown Affair had end cap displays in just 56 doors (out of nearly 600), so Vegas felt like a dream invite that might never come. A mentor of mine — a founder who’s built a wildly successful beauty business over the past two decades (more than half of that with Sephora) — once told me that even she doesn’t always get the call. It was the reminder I needed: being in Sephora at all is a privilege.
And then this year, we got the call. And looking back, I get it now — we weren’t meant to be there before. We weren’t ready. I wasn’t ready.

Nearly six years of consistent work, and suddenly, I woke up on Tuesday morning, August 4th, and it felt like a good thing had happened overnight.
Friends and mentors like Jen Atkin (Jen — thank you for being a cheerleader and guide on this journey) were texting me as our booth was going up. I walked in and saw our dreamy ritual bedroom, brought to life. The day unfolded in a blur of joy — hundreds of conversations with managers, beauty advisors, and the Sephora community — and I couldn’t help but wonder: How did we get here? How did my team bring this to life? How did my hair get this good? (The answer is always Crown Affair.)

In many ways, the journey of Crown Affair began back in 2018 — and yet, it still feels like the beginning. With The Overnight Repair Serum, I finally get to share the first real magic trick my team and I have been quietly crafting behind the scenes.
This moment marks another stake in the ground for what we’re building: proof that you can create something beautiful and intentional without chasing trends or cutting corners. You don’t have to look, smell, or feel like everything else on the shelf.
If you’re building something from scratch, I hope this reminds you it’s possible. With a great product, a clear vision, the right team, and a lot of perseverance, you can do it — just not overnight. (And for the record, I’m still early in my journey. But nearly six-ish years in, I finally feel like we’re stepping into the vision I saw from day one.)
I hope this gave you a quick peek behind the curtain into the formula, yes, but also the heart of building something that lasts. Because after years of consistent care and focus, whether it’s growing a brand or evolving yourself, sometimes you wake up and it feels like magic happened overnight.
But the truth is: it was time, the most important ingredient of all, that turned the dream (and dream hair) into reality.
Take care, and take your time, always,
Dianna
And now…
Three Things I Love:
Sarah Creal Concealer Brush: Let this be a reminder: your tools matter—especially brushes. I swapped a decent concealer brush for this one and…game over. It blends product (this is my fav concealer) like a dream, truly 11/10. It also just won an Allure Best of Beauty Award. Go Sarah go.
Cyro De-Puffing Facial Mask: This one has become a true staple, especially for when I travel and I need to de-puff. It’s like an instant reset button for my face — cooling, soothing. Think of it as an at-home facial in 10 minutes flat.
Comme Si Pilates Socks: I know, it feels like every week I’m raving about Comme Si. But when it’s this good, how can I not? Jenni and I launched our brands around the same time, and what started as friendship has turned me into a loyal customer. Every month it feels like I’m something new. Latest obsession: the pilates socks. A whimsical and elevated take on a workout essential? I’m sold.
One Haircare Tip: This one’s from NYMag and Allure!

In honor of The Towel winning its first Allure Best of Beauty Award (and getting print love in NYMag), here’s the simplest upgrade you can make: swap your bath towel for a hair towel.
Strategist senior editor Simone Kitchens has been loyal to hair towels for a decade, but once she tried ours two years ago, she was all in: less frizz, softer texture, more defined curls.
The difference? The waffle weave, the oversized square shape that actually fits all your hair, and a clever elastic loop to keep it secure. Tip: gently squeeze water out with The Towel post-shower — don’t rub. You’ll cut drying time, reduce frizz, and keep your strands healthier long term.
According to Allure, a quality hair towel can make the difference between a good hair day and a mediocre one. The Towel is supremely gentle on freshly washed strands, reducing friction and speeding up the drying process with its waffle pattern and microfiber blend. Smaller than the traditional bath towel but larger than your average hair towel, the large square-ish shape ensures that every hair texture can use it.
P.S. You can snag The Towel in Limited Edition Green at Sephora as part of this set. Everything inside is usually $117, but it’s $75 right now.
